Organic Food Part 2

I shared about the pechay and the eggplant my aunt grows in our “garden”.  I became more interested with organic food when my mom received a pack of organic rice grown in Mt. Province and when Bella, my six-year old cousin visited us. She doesn’t eat processed food and her favorite snack is carrot sticks.

That was my first time to taste organic rice and I swear I loved it. The cooking instruction indicated that the ratio is 3 cups water to 1 cup rice. So, imagine the yield, and how the uncooked rice expanded tremendously. For ordinary rice variety, the rule of the thumb is use 1:1 ratio, i.e., i cup water to 1 cup rice. That’s why my first attempt to cook rice was successful.

Now for the carrots. We had to look for organically grown carrots for Bella but we did not find a hard time.  We frequent Sidcor, a haven for food lovers.  If you don’t know where it is and hadn’t been there, just visit Lung Center ( very near Pisay) every Sunday and there you will be overwhelmed with exotic food.  The tiny, cute carrots were waiting for us.  Definitely smaller but sweeter than the ones we buy in supermarket or talipapas.

Of course, I was curious what organic farming is all about, so I asked my aunt’s suki a few information.  He told me the advantages of organic farming and I appreciated his taking time to explain why he is into this method. He said organic farming produces nutritious food that are safe to consume; farmers do not need much capital to buy farm inputs since they can use whatever resources they already have; pests and disease are controlled without harming the environment; and fertility of the soil is increased because they use compost as fertilizer.

I believed all that he said because this is also what my aunt told me who is now venturing on raising organically grown chicken. I hope I could share more of her experiences  next time.

So there you are. If we want to stay healthy and help the environment, Go Organic. Incidentally, there is a new program recently launched by the government on organic farming.  I’ll try to check on this for my next topic.
